The Responses of Heteroxenia (alcyonaria) to Stimulation and to Some Inorganic Ions

چکیده

The Red Sea Alcyonarian Heteroxeniafuscescens (Ehrb.) consists of a pinkish brown fleshy syndete up to 5 cm. in length, firmly attached to a stone or dead coral, from which grows a mass of autozooids with columns 2-4 cm. long and 2-3 mm. in diameter (Fig. 1). The first physiological observations on a xenid were made by Keller (1883) on a brown species from Suez that he considered to be H. fuscescens. He described the rhythmical movements in which the tentacles are clapped together (Fig 2A). The zooids beat independently of one another, and the two halves of a disk, split longitudinally, continued to beat as before but independently. Leaning on the Hertwigs' (1879) statement that the nervous system of actinians is best developed in the disk, Keller came to the conclusion that there is here a diffusely spread rhythmical centre. He also pointed out the resemblance to the beat of medusae.

Heavy metals removal from wastewater by using different kinds of magnetite nanoadsorbents: effects of different organic and inorganic coatings on the removal of copper and lead ions

Co-precipitation procedure was applied in order to obtain different kinds of magnetic nanoadsobents for the removal of Pb(II) and Cu(II) toxic metal ions from wastewater samples. Prepared nanoadsorbents were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The average sizes of t...

Optimization of Copper and Zinc ions removal from aqueous solution by modified Nano-bentonite using Response surface methodology

Presence of heavy metal ions in wastewater is an important public concern. Adsorption are commonly used technique to remove various pollutants, including the ions, from contaminated water sources. However, common methods for adsorption are not completely efficient at low ion concentrations and the adsorbent should be improved in order to reaching the acceptable levels of adsorption efficiency. ...

Glutaminergic receptors in rostral ventrolateral medulla mediate the cardiovascular responses to activation of bed nucleus of the stria terminalis in female rats

The bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST) has been known to contain estrogen (E)-concentrating neurons. In addition, injections of E into BST have been reported to potentiate the sympathoinhibitory arterial pressure (AP) and heart rate (HR) responses elicited by glutamate (Glu) stimulation. In this study, the effect of glutamate antagonist receptors in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVL...

MEDIAN NERVE STIMULATION PO TENTIATES THE MU SCLE RESPONSES TO TRANS C RANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION

Motor responses evoked by transcranial magnetic stimulation OMS) or transcranial electrical stimulation (TCS) can be facilitated by a prior conditioning stimulus to an afferent nerve. Two facilitation periods are described short (SI), when the nerve stimulus is given near 0 to 10 ms after cranial stimulation, and long (LI), when nerve stimulation is given 25-60 ms before the cranial stimula...
